Sakunthala Jagaunathan Museum of Folk Art
The Sakuntala Jagannathan Museum of Folk Art is situated in Brahma Mandiram the 400 year old house belonging to landowner of Damal, the maternal ancestors of Sir C.P.Ramaswami Aiyar. Reliable sources date it to the 16 17th centuries. The existence of wall paintings, sculptures and household collections prompted the reuse of the house as a museum. St. Thomas Mount St.
Mount is a small hillock situated south of Chennai, where St. Thomas - the Apostle of Jesus, preached Christianity. He himself carved a ‘Stone-Cross’ everyday St. Thomas used this stone-cross for his prayer. One day when he was in prayer with the cross, the killers commanded by king Raja Mahadeva knifed him on the hack. But St. Thomas continued his prayer up to his death. His blood, bleeding on the stone cross. For several centuries the stains of his blood could not be remove from the stone-cross. The Church also holds a fascinating painting of Holy Mother and Infant Jesus said to have been painted by the apostle St. Thomas himself during 1st century AD. St. Thomas Mount, Chennai 600 016. Open air Museum
This newly setup modern open-air museum of sculpture reflects the cultural heritage of the Tamils from the Pre-Sangam days. The objects on display, shaped mostly from granite by 200 sculptors, include chains of stone, ornamental wheels and a host of other items. The themes here are many, including those relating to historical and cultural events of the past, placing the contribution of the Tamils in proper perspective. Situated very close to the shore temple, one can have a glimpse of the past as well as the progress being made in the present in the field of art in Tamil Nadu here.
50 Kilometers from Mamallapuram, there is a ruined fort built by the Nawabs. Backwaters and cool sands provide a nice for picnics spot.
